On Friday, Steve Nash turned 40. He’s the oldest player in the NBA, the only 40-year-old currently playing, and he only recently returned from back and hamstring injuries that have kept him out for most of the season.
But despite being well past his prime, Nash is still capable of some of his old tricks, like this behind-the-back no-look pass to Shawne Williams for a wide-open three-pointer during the Lakers’ 112-98 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on his birthday.
Nash used to throw passes like this all the time in his prime, but his declining health and advancing age make it unlikely we’ll get to see him play basketball for much longer. Nash has one year left on his contract with the Lakers, but there’s a very real chance the two-time MVP will retire after this season.
What this means is that, despite the Lakers’ doomed season, every spectacular pass he throws this year is worth celebrating.
